Friend has an iPhone 3GS with the iPad baseband, 6.15.00.. he got it second hand.
Checked his IMEI online and it was factory unlocked. What I don't get is why he installed the iPad bb when it's factory unlocked?.
Any ideas?

Maybe he unlocked via ultrasnow before he decided to get factory unlocked? Not too sure. Never did the factory unlock with the iPad baseband.

That's what I was thinking..
He's running iOS 4.1 I think..
And wants to update to 5.1.1 before its too late to.
So I'm thinking I should create a custom 5.1.1 preserving the baseband for precaution..
Then do a normal iTunes restore to update (not using the custom ipsw)..
If its still locked then I can use the custom, then downgrade the bb after..
What do you think?

That would work. It's usually a good idea to preserve an unlockable baseband. And the bb downgrade us a good idea too. Makes life a little easier.
