Hi all,

I just got my phone two weeks ago and added contacts, music, and some free apps. I got the 4.0.1 version still, and I want to jailbreak.

Before I do this I have to restore, right? I've backed everything up, and it's ready to be restored and jailbroken. The only thing is that when I try to restore iTunes tells me that it's going to restore, BUT it will install the latest version upon doing so.

How do I restore without updating? (I tried looking around for a similar thread but did not see anybody with the same issue.)

Any ideas? I'm new to this jailbreaking stuff.

If you restore it will install the latest firmware. You will not be able to jailbreak when this is done. Typically when a new firmware is released jailbreaks for that firmware version are quick to follow.

You won't be asked which version you'd like to restore. As hoserama says it will instal latest firmware

All you need is for it to be backed up. No need to restore. Just jailbreak it and enjoy.

well you can press option+restore or shift+restore for windows and select the 4.0.1 firmware instead of of letting it go to 4.0.2

Thanks all for the reply. I am unfortunately on windows right now so I can't pick and choose the version. I have two options;

1. Just jailbreak w/o restore. Is this a dvisable?
2. Try to restore without internet connection, that way it can't download latest software. Will that work?

Ideas?

Go #1
Go #1

Just jailbreak and when the new jailbreak comes out(which shouldn't be to long from now) restore if you need to. Or you could just wait for the new jailbreak to do it.

why would you restore before jailbreaking? i never done that and it always works just fine. so do #1

Hi all,

Noob here, but can't you also download the firmware version you'd like to use, and then (as mentioned above) direct iTunes to restore to it, as opposed to updating to the latest version?

I've DL'd 3.1.2 for my dad's old 2G, and am planning to shift+click on Restore and use that firmware when I JB and UL his phone later today...

it doesent work like that.. you cant download 2g firmware and use it on iphone 4 or 3g or even 3gs.. it has to be firmware made for the iphone 4. plus if your on firmware 4.0.2 its not that simple downgrading back to 4.0. but it is a good way to stay on the firmware if you need to restore like being on 4.0.1 and then using shift restore to stay on 4.0.1 instead of having to upgrade to 4.0.2 and lose the jailbreak.

and why would you want to put 3.0.2 on there with no multi tasking no background pics no nothing. you would need jailbreak more then ever. even if it where possible. maybe some has has managed to do it somewhere but as far as i know its not possible

EDIT: Try to jailbreak it first.. the only reason to restore before jailbreak is to avoid bugs/crashes that people do experience. Also, loading a restore from a backup can also cause problems so just keep this in mind. It may NOT give you any problems

So there are still reports of people being able to downgrade back to 4.0.1 without any tricks.. meaning Apple is still signing 4.0.1

This was yesterday, have not tried today

Anyway, its worth a try to go to:

iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download

then download the iPhone 4 4.0.1 firmware

in iTunes just shift + restore , hope you are still in time.
