Ringtones.... how to..

Is it possible to download and install ringtones (in MP3 or other format) directly to the iPhone? I'm thinking about sending myself an email attachment in the iPhone format, m4r, and saving it as a ringtone. It can be done with jpg's this way and be set for desktop wallpaper on the phone, so why not ringtones??
Basically, I'm trying to stay away form having to use iTunes. Haven't used it yet -- sounds too complicated for old geezers like me!
Any advice on getting and setting ringtones would be appreciated...

no you have to add the m4r to itunes rintone folder then from there copy to the iphone
