It’s probably fair to say that it’s been a particularly confusing time leading up to the next iPhone in terms of rumours, especially those recent rumours from a very good source that there would be three versions of the iPhone 7, including a “Pro” version, that emerged one week and were then disputed by other sources the next.
However, according to a new Nikkei report via Business Insider, Apple had in fact been planning to launch three versions of the iPhone 7, and then decided against it, hence the confusion.
Nikkei’s sources said that Apple had initially intended to release two versions of the iPhone 7 Plus, one with a dual-lens camera and one with a single-lens camera. There were even leaked factory photos showing all three models, to further back up the story, and it was also reported that the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 with the dual-lens camera would be called the iPhone 7 Pro, with the single-lens version taking the Plus name.
So far, so good.
But then Apple decided not to release the single-lens 5.5-inch iPhone, and instead stick to just releasing two iPhone 7 models, the smaller one without a dual-lens camera, and the larger one with.
“This never happened before,” said Nikkei’s source. “Before this year, Apple never made changes to iPhone’s product line mere months before the launch. It has been a volatile year for Apple.”
