9to5 Mac reports today on the news that a Russian developer has managed to find a way to hack into the App Store and make in-app purchases for free. The hack was first picked up on by Russian blog i-ekb.ru, and can be executed without using a jailbroken device, and, 9to5 Mac says, can be done by any novice, as it does not require expert knowledge, and will work on all devices running iOS 3.0 to 6.0. 9to5 Mac says that it has primarily decided to publicise the hack to alert the Apple developer community and warn them. The Russian developer, called ZonD80, has even posted an instruction video on YouTube, and set up a website. 9to5 Mac points out that it has discovered that Apple does have a way of preventing the hack, in that it enables developers to validate receipts for in-app purchases, and so the hack wont work for those apps, so the developers need to ensure this is in place to protect their apps.
