Given the way that Apple has generally been thought to have been trying to diversify its supply chain of late in order to not be so reliant on Samsung, AppleInsider has a somewhat surprising story today that Samsung is one of three companies supplying dynamic random access memory (DRAM) for the iPhone 6.
Timothy Arcuri of Cowen and Company said in a note to investors on Monday that despite being left out of Apple’s DRAM supply chain for the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s, Samsung is once again one of Apple’s chosen manufacturers for the iPhone 6, alongside Micron and Elpida.
AppleInsider notes that it is still not known how much DRAM will be included in the new A8 processor that will be powering the iPhone 6.
Arcuri also says that Apple is likely to be ordering so much of the available market supply of DRAM in the fall that prices are expected to increase between 3 to 5 % in September.
