Siri won't read my text messages

When I say "Read my new messages," Siri says "you have no new text messages, even when I do have new messages. Anybody know why?

I'm pretty sure headphones or a BT headset needs to be connected for Siri to read your messages or emails aloud.

You do not need headphones or a Bluetooth for her to read your messages. I just asked her to read my text messages and she just read it and I do not have either
