Small hole next to headphone jack?

Why is there a small hole next to the headphone jack? What is it for?

No. Not for the SIM. The SIM hole is only on the side of a GSM iPhone directly beside the SIM tray.


The tiny hole beside the headphone jack is the "noise canceling microphone".

Well why is it on top and not on the bottom by the speaker?

Because if it was on the bottom it would cancel your own speech.

The small microphone is used to cancel background noise.....wind, TV, etc.

That's a good feature, I didn't know the phones had that. I knew the hole was there but not what it was for.

it depends what model. on the 2G/3G/3GS, that hole is a sim card tray eject.

+1... on the 4 & 4S is the noise canceling mic as stated above.

I also knew that, but if he did have the older iPhones, surely he would have known that hole was for the SIM tray, where as the hole beside the headphone jack, on 4 & 4S, seems to have no meaning, as there is nothing around it except the jack, therefore needs inquiring.

I guess it's safe to assume that the OP doesn't have an understanding of iPhone physiology. This the question at hand. I had a good friend of mine who's owned an iPhone 3GS for a little under a year now. He purchased another used 3GS for his wife and asked me last night.. "Where do you put the sim card?" I'm like... seriously?!? LOL!!!

On the iPhone 4s the verizon also has a sim card (world phone feature) so it's not just gsm.

Correct, but the slot is located on the side of the iPhone, not the top.
