MacRumors reports on a survey from analytics firm Flurry which compares the video game market share in 2009 and 2010. According to the survey, as far as the overall market share is concerned, iOS and Android had an 8% share in 2010, 3% up from the 5% share held by the iPhone on its own in 2009. However, its in the portable gaming market that iOS and Android has really made a big leap, from 19% for iPhone in 2009, to 34% for iOS and Android in 2010. This appears to be mainly at the expense of the Sony PSP, with Sonys handheld dropping to a 9% share in 2010 from 11% in 2009, and the Nintendo DS falling from 70% to 57%. MacRumors points out that the jump in revenue for iOS and Android means that the revenue for the portable gaming market as a whole has actually fallen, from $2.7 billion in 2009 to $2.4 billion in 2010, because iOS and Android games cost so much less than Nintendo DS and Sony PSP games.
