SMS problem

I have a US Verizon Iphone 5. I travel frequently to the UK. Now in London I have replaced my Verizon sim card with a sim card from "3" (Uk phone network provider) in order to use the phone locally at low cost. With this card I make and receive voice calls; I can send and receive IMessages; and I can receive SMS texts. But I can't send SMS texts -- just get "not delivered" errors. 3 support attempted to be helpful, but they could not solve the problem -- finally suggesting it may have something to do with Verizon being a CDMA phone. But it is also a GSM phone, so why do I have this problem? Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? (Using IOS 6.1.4 10B350 and SMS is permissioned)

Have you tried resetting the network?
