songs play in iTunes, but not on iPhone

I have a few songs that won't play on the iPhone 4. When the iPod app gets to them, it just moves on to the next song without any type of error message. Yet many of these songs will play in Itunes. What would be the reason for this? I presume it's because they are in a format that's not compatible with the iPhone. If so, can they be converted so that they will play?

I guess I'm asking; if it plays in iTunes, why not on the iPhone?

They might be damaged from the download or are missing files to make them work.
