Special characters in phone number

I regularly need to phone a number and then enter a string of numbers interspersed with command symbols (such as # or *) that stay the same every time. A previous phone I had offered me the facility to enter pauses, followed by these characters as part of the phone number (effectively a macro).

Can I do this using iOS and the iPhone 5? If so, how?
