Reuters reveals today how both Stanford University Hospital and Duke University are to undertake clinical trials involving Apple’s new HealthKit app. The new app is designed to work in conjunction with compatible medical devices, such as blood-pressure and glucose monitors.
In the case of Stanford, doctors there are working with Apple and using HealthKit to track blood sugar levels in children with diabetes.
At Duke, a pilot is being developed to track blood pressure, weight and various other measurements in patients with cancer or heart disease.
Reuters says that the main aim of the trials is to improve the speed and accuracy of data reporting, which is currently done mainly by phone or fax, with the idea that doctors would be able to warn patients as soon as possible about any problems they might spot.
As Reuters notes, Apple did actually mention the trials in a press release announcing iOS 8 last week, but this is the first we have heard of any specific details about the trials, which will start rolling out in the next few weeks.
