Syncing sms

This may be a stupid question. How do I make sure that when I get my new iphone my sms messages get transferred to my new iphone. I am almost sure if I do a restore from back up it will, but I wanted to do it differently.
I want to set it up as a new phone and then just sync it. But when I do I get only contacts and calendar and notes but no sms messages, no favorites and no recent calls.

When you sync and it says "backing up" that is when it saves settings,mms ect.

I dunoo. Here is what I did, I sync my old iphone. Then I pluged in my new iphone selected set up as a new phone, then I clicked sync and when it did I did not get mms, nor favorites, nor recent calls.

The reason why i did not created from back up is I wanted my new phone have a fresh start

Yes, just syncing will not transfer mms. Only If you restore as your old phone.
