According to an article by David Pogue on Yahoo Tech, the columnist has found out that the Apple Watch is water-resistant and not waterproof. Although the device can be worn when washing hands, cooking or even in the rain, the Apple Watch must be taken off when doing things like swimming or taking a shower.
"Sweating, wearing it in the rain, washing your hands, or cooking with it are fine,...Take it off before you swim or get in the shower, though"
The difference between water-resistant and waterproof is quite simple. Water-resistant devices have a protective layer which doesn't allow water to soak through immediately, while waterproof devices make it impossible for water to get in.
