Many considered Apple's decision to launch a gold iPhone as an entry into the luxury market, but as it turns out, there was another reason for this. In a recent interview, CEO Tim Cook explains that Apple takes Chinese consumer tastes into account when it designs many of its products.
And given the popularity of the Gold color among Chinese users, Apple decided to add a gold iPhone in addition to its standard silver and gray/black colors. The booming sales that followed confirmed the high interest Chinese consumers expressed in Apple's gold smartphones.
The gold color is considered lucky in China and is hugely popular in the greater China region. According to Apple's recent financial reports, this is actually Apple’s second largest market for iPhone sales. Seeing that the gold iPhone was a succes, Apple has also introduced gold versions of its iPad, MacBook and Apple Watch.
