Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Recently a new way of showing support and donating to research has made its way onto the internet, the Ice Bucket Challenge. The challenge was created by former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates, giving participants the choice between getting a bucket full of ice water poured on them, or donating $100. The person participating in the challenge also gets to nominate three people to do the challenge before or after.
Phil Schiller recently did the challenge and it looks like the rest of Apple may be getting on board to show support for ALS. At an Apple employee event, Tim Cook took the stage where he did the challenge and agree to donate X amount of money. Before the the Apple CEO had a bucket of ice water poured on his head, Cook nominated Dr. Dre, Michael Franti and Disney CEO Bob Iger.
The ALS Association received about $4 million dollars in that last two weeks, compared to $1.12 million in the same period last year, meaning that the challenge is raising awareness.
