Hi I just got an iPhone 4S my prev. Phone was a samsung captivate. Is there a simple way to transfer my gmail
contacts to the iphone? Also I don't see a contact icon like on my ipad.

There should be a Contacts stock application. Try finding it with Spotlight search. You can log into your Gmail account via Settings > Mail, Contacts and Calendar, and choose to sync contacts, and you should be able to port your contacts.

I still do not see a contacts icon I looked in spot lite search and it is checked?

Ok sorry I am new to this phone where would I fine the folder with utilities

Ok I found the folder with contacts and put it on my desk top now how do I transfer all my contacts to it?

I did that but do not see anything that says sync contacts.

Did you download the gmail app? They should have synced automatically. I cannot post an outside link per forum rules, but if you google "sync gmail contacts with iphone" the first entry gives the step by step instructions. Personally, I use iCloud to sync my contacts.

I already downloaded the app but it didn't sync so I am just going to add one by one
