It's a long story, but bottom line is: they won't do it. Got to do it on my own

Actually, I tried again and contacted a different Sprint rep and he said he sent an unlock request to Apple and that my phone would be unloced in 4 h rs. He said do a backup, then a factory reset, then restore and my phone would be unlocked and that I would see it's unlocked status in iTunes. Well, I did that, but didn't see aything in iTunes so I called back, got a different rep who also said their records show my phone is unlocked. Anyone know how I can confirm that before I leave the USA.
