Unlock US 3g to use in Aust

Hi all, a mate have me his 3g which he was given to him by his cousin while he was in the US but it's locked to to AT & T.

Have run redsnow etc and can get cydia and run ultrasnow etc working fine and can identify the carrier (optus in this case) but will not connect to the carrier or identify it on the service bar.

Have put it in to get unlocked in a local shop who also can not unlock it from AT&T.

Could anyone point us in the direction on how to get it unlocked and able to use on any AUST carrier?

Have you done a "reset all network settings"?

Yup, the band was in range, had 4.2.1 installed, ran cydia and the ultrasnow, reset settings. Turned off, installed sim and it can see the carrier in the details with 1 signal bar but wont connect

Put the phone into a store to get inlocked from AT&T with no joy.

Any avenues I could go down to unlock from this carrier and use inOZ at all?
