Using iPhone in China

I have a locked Rogers (Canada) iPhone that I'm considering unlocking so I can use it on a month-long vacation in China.

Can anyone advise about how to get hooked up with a plan in Beijing?

It looks like China Unicom is the only iPhone 4 carrier but I've heard their data rates are very high for the first month. I don't need phone, just data.

Would I be better off going to China Mobile and cutting down a SIM for their Edge network?

if your phone is a gsm one, try to unlock it and once in China you can use China Mobile services and have the edge data connection, you can also use China Unicom services which have the 3G connection.
If your phone is not a gsm one, then you will have to buy another phone once here.
