According to a report from CNET, Verizon Wireless will be the world's first carrier to begin moving towards a 5th generation cellular network. The article claims Verizon's field trials will begin sometime in the next 12 months, but of course it will be a few years before we see an iPhone running 5G.
Verizon's internal tests show that the 5G network will be 30 to 50 times faster than what we are currently experiencing with 4G LTE. The new network will be even faster than Google's Fiber network, making downloading something like a movie possible in seconds rather than minutes.
CNET states that the 5th generation technology is also more power-efficient, "so devices are expected to last ten times as long". With the huge upgrade Apple made to its iPhones last year, battery-life has become less of a problem, but we're always happy to welcome more.
