video format that will play on iphone5?

I've got .mpg, .mp4 and .m4v in my video folder and itunes doesn't recognize any of them to add to my library. What format is needed to play on iphones and be recognized in itunes? Thanks.

MPEG-4 and H.264 formats are the preferred format. But if you want to watch other formatted videos, there are apps in the AppStore that allows you to do so.

Thanks, but I thought .mp4 was mpeg-4

I haven't tried the phone but the only formats (of movies) my iPad plays (and I suspect the same of the iPhones) is .mp4 and .m4v.

.mpeg4 does not exist as a filetype AFAIK
