Voicemail icon

I have an iPhone5. I have a red dot on my voicemail icon. I have checked my voicemail and I don't have a new voicemail. I can't get rid of the red dot. Please help!!

Have you set up your voicemail yet? Also try doing a reset. Press and hold home button and power button until it shuts off.

My voicemail has been say up since I had my phone which has been before Christmas. First time I have ever encountered this, and I have had iPhones for the past couple years. I will try doing a reset? I won't loose any information?
