On iOS 4.2 Apple has added a volume bar in the App Switcher on your device. This allows you to turn your volume up and down without having to press your volume buttons, saving the life of your volume buttons. This also help you by not having you move your hand while you change the volume, instead you move your thumb. You laugh at this now, but all that volume button pressing while your device is in your hand could lead to a small case of Carpel Tunnel, I kid.
