If you're like me, you need to keep your cell phone on at night. I have soldiers that need to be able to call me 24/7 for help if they need it. BUT, I don't want to listen to emails, Words with Friends, etc. AND, I also need my alarm to work in the morning. I want all of this, but I don't want to adjust settings every night.
Want a solution?
Go to Silent Night iPhone Adapter - www.thesilentnight.com and buy an adapter for $12. Stick it into the headphone jack and wala, it works. The alarm and ringer still work through the speaker, but nothing else will make a sound.
You could probably do the same thing for free by just plugging any mic into the jack, but I like this method.
Be warned that it might not work with all cases without a little modification.
