What does the Symbol Mean?

As you slide up that menu from the bottom of the phone, you see symbols for airplane mode, sleep, WiFi, etc. What does the symbol that looks like a Tootsie Pop with parentheses mean? I have turned it on and off, but it does not say what it is that I am turning on and off. Thanks!

Thank you. Now, what does "cellular data" mean and why is that symbol lit up?

It's the information or data supplied by your mobile provider via the SIM card, in contrast to WIFI. It's lit up when it is on.

It means apps or services are allowed to use the cellular network to connect to the internet.

^^^ Oh. Thanks. I thought they did that anyway. How else would I connect to the Internet otherwise? I know my phone can and does pick up on my U-Verse Internet at home, though. I suppose that is an added layer of a strong connection.
