When 3G is off no service

Hi, I want to save battery and I turn my 3G off on my iphone 4 running 4.0.1 but It gives me no service. I would have normally full bars when 3G is turned on. I am with virgin mobile in canada which uses HSPA+ so it should he compatible with edge networks, yet i always get no service. My carrier info shows bell 7.2

Any recommendations or fixes?

I am in Canada on Bell and have the same issue. My brother-in-law is with Rogers and when he turns off 3G, he gets edge. I get no service.

Ok, did some googling and found that Bell (and therefore any of the carriers partnered with them) doesn't support 2G (edge). What that doesn't answer for me though is why I have NO SERVICE AT ALL when 3G is off. I can understand data being affected but why voice?

U got a problem..
U need to verify about regarding the phone and the type os technology u r using whether its CDMA or GSM.. if.. nothing works. try for an iphone repair store..

I don't think you've read this thread very carefully...
