Where arethe backed-up files on my laptop?

I backed up my iPhone yesterday to my laptop, but I can't find the files I moved over. I have lots of pics and several videos on my iPhone that I thought were transferred to my laptop. Although I have iTunes on my laptop, I don't see a section where they should be. Shouldn't I have these files on my laptop without having to sync my iPhone to it? Otherwise what's the point? I need to delete files off my iPhone to recover space, but I need to know that they made it onto my laptop. I'm not that proficient with iTunes, so bear with me on this.

I realized my error. I was looking in iTunes for my files when all I needed to do was go to Windows Explorer, find my iPhone device as my iPhone is plugged in to my laptop and click down into its sub-folders until I see all my files. I can then click on any/all files sitting on my iPhone and copy/paste them into whatever folders on my laptop that I wish.
