I recently had some problems with my jailbroken iphone 3g so am planning to restore, but what software should I use? Its currently on iOS4.x i think (not sure). Should I restore it to 5.x or 6.x?

Also just want to check, to restore a jailbroken phone, I should download a custom ios software file and then restore with redsnow right? Would this cause any problems with it being an unlocked phone? Btw the wifi is not working and cannot be used which I think was needed for unlocking a phone.

The highest firmware officially supported for the iPhone 3G is iOS 4.2.1.

I've seen a program called whited00r which allows you to load an edited iOS 5 or iOS 6 version onto your iPhone 3G but I have never tested it myself.

Apple has simply stop giving support to the iPhone 3G for some time which explains why it is not OFFICIALLY supported with normal ipsw's.

Oh crap, is my phone that old already?? Anyway... So I guess I will use 4.2.1, and to restore it to that I should use redsnow correct? I've never done it myself before so a bit nervous I could mess it up completely.

@tortelliniguy, we try to stay away from WhiteD00r on iPhoneForums since it's along the grey area. Plus there are a few instability factors of it that can brick the device.

The 3G and 3GS are probably the easiest devices to fix in my opinion and experience. So many exploits you can take advantage of to get it running once again. The process of jailbreaking isn't that hard really, we'll walk you through it.

Download the iOS 4.2.1 IPSW for your iPhone 3G here

Download the latest version of RedSn0w which is 0.9.15 beta 3 here for Windows

https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.15b3.zip?attredirects=0&d=1

Run RedSn0w as an administrator, go to Extras > Select IPSW and point it to the iOS 4.2.1 IPSW that you downloaded before. Click back, then click the Jailbreak button. At this point, if you know how to put your device into DFU mode, do so. Otherwise, you can follow the on-screen instructions. If you're inexperienced with DFU mode, just click Next and "watch" the instructions instead of performing them, maybe once or twice, so you get the feel of how you need to react and to get a general sense of what you need to do. Once the iPhone is in DFU mode, there will be a series of checkboxes on the next screen. Make sure you tick Install Cydia. Click Next and wait for the magic to happen. Once your iPhone is booted up, double check that there is an app called Cydia that should be on the 2nd screen on your Springboard.

Thanks Willerz, you give very good instructions! I'm downloading the ipsw now, on my super slow internet, but it says the file name is iphone1,2_4.2.1blabla to me that sounds like it is for iphone 1g or 2g, but I am guessing you know more than me. I'm downloading it anyway but if its wrong please let me know.

The Original iPhone is termed the iPhone 2G. The identifier header for the iPhone 2G is the iPhone1,1. iPhone1,2 refers to the iPhone 3G. iPhone2,1 refers to the 3GS. It's basically Apple's way of identifying the different types of devices for all of their devices. Since the Original and the 3G weren't that far off of each other, they kept it within the same identifier header, which is iPhone1

That whited00r software is a modified 3.x.x software made to look like iOS 5 or 6. It has some of the features of the newer iOS versions but is still older software at its core. I had it on my old 3G for a day before I took it off. Almost none of the newer apps will work on it. You have to get modified versions of the older apps to even use it. I do not recommend it.
