1 in Red Circle Over Settings Icon

I have a 1 in a red circle over the Setting icon.

How do I find out what's causing it and what do I do about it?

Probably an iOS update. Check Settings > General > Software update.

You are correct. It downloaded an iOS update and wanted me to go ahead and do the update.

That is known as an icon badge and lets you know that there is some type of new information that the user needs to see - such as an update.
