Still waiting for my 5s. When it arrives I'll have to restore my data from my iP4 backup, and VZW will have to activate. Should I restore first, and then activate, or vice versa? Or does it matter?

While activating, it should ask whether you want to set the device up as new, restore from iCloud or restore from iTunes. Select Restore from iTunes and plug it into your terminal. Then select the backup that you want to restore and restore it.

Many thanks! It sounds like I can activate it myself. I wonder why Verizon said I should call them when it comes time to activate?

It might be because of a new SIM that you might have to. But from experience, you can do it online on your own if it doesn't work directly on the device

The CDMA 4 doesn't have a SIM. But since the 4S, 5, 5C and 5S are world devices, they'll have a SIM, even if you're on Verizon. If you ordered the device directly from Verizon, it should come with a SIM card as well

Keyword being should. Sometimes it may be forgotten or you might have to drop by your local VZW retail and get a SIM through them assuming the original intent was to have it shipped to your directly. If it's shipped directly from Verizon, the SIM should actually be in the device already and should be ready to activate.
