New research from Gartner shows that Apple is about to overtake Nokia as the second-largest mobile phone vendor in the world. Reporting on the figures, AppleInsider says that sales of the iPhone 6 have propelled Apple very close to Nokia, with Samsung still number 1 overall, as always.
Apple is believed to have sold around 38.2 million iPhones in the third quarter of 2014, according to Gartner’s quarterly handset sales tracker. Nokia is slightly ahead of that with 43.1 million, and Samsung is way out in front with 94 million devices sold.
AppleInsider points out that both Nokia and Samsung’s figures include feature phones as well as smartphones. If you take away feature phones from the equation, then Apple is directly behind Samsung, and Nokia is absent from the top 5.
Gartner’s figures show a 26% year-over-year increase for Apple, whereas Nokia has seen a 32% drop in sales. Samsung also saw a 20% drop in sales, with feature phone sales falling.
