Apple is no longer pursuing a hardware subscription service that would have allowed customers to “subscribe” to get a new iPhone each year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The Subscription Concept

Originally rumored back in 2022, Apple’s subscription service was designed to simplify device ownership. Instead of paying upfront or financing an iPhone over 12 or 24 months, customers would have paid an ongoing monthly fee to use the device. This system would have targeted users looking for affordability and convenience, providing access to new hardware without the need for a large upfront cost.

While Apple already offers the iPhone Upgrade Program, which splits payments over a fixed term, the proposed subscription model was more flexible and would have operated as a perpetual monthly service.

Payment Service Streamlining

Apple’s decision aligns with recent changes to its payment offerings. Earlier this year, the company shut down Apple Pay Later, its short-lived buy-now-pay-later service, after less than a year of availability. This indicates a broader streamlining of Apple’s financial services strategy.
