watchOS 2 was first unveiled at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. The new firmware will be the first major update to the Apple Watch operating system, since the release of watchOS 1.1 back in May.
The final build of watchOS 2 is expected to be released sometime in the Fall. The firmware will allow developers to access sensors, like the heart rate monitor and accelerometer, along with running third-party apps natively on the device. Aside from developer features, users will be able to experience third-party complications, two new watchfaces, and Nightstand mode.
We expect that watchOS 2 will also bring some tweaks to accuracy of the sensors, as well as some battery tweaks to possibly allow for longer battery life. watchOS 2 currently can only be downloaded and installed by developers, but reports claim that the beta firmwares are a bit buggy, and there's no way of downgrading.
