AllThings D reports today that new figures from Strategy Analytics show that Androids share of the US smartphone market fell in the second quarter of 2012, at the same time that iOSs share of the market grew. For the three months ending in June, Android had 56% of the smartphone market in the US, a decrease from 61% in the previous year. Android shipments also fell from 15.3 million to 13.4 million. Meanwhile, the iPhones US smartphone market share increased to 33% from 23% last year, and iPhone shipments rose to 7.9 million from 5.9 million. Essentially what this means, as AllThings Ds John Paczkowski notes, is that although Android is still dominant in the US, Apple is slowly starting to chip away at that dominance. Paczkowski also notes that smartphone shipments overall declined in this period by 5% to 23.8 million units, so Androids fall reflects this, although Paczkowski adds that Apples increase proves that there are other reasons for Androids slight fall as well, which will make the third-quarter results very interesting indeed when they come around.
