AppleInsider reports today on new figures from market research firm IDC that show that Apple has now retaken the worlds number one smartphone maker crown away from Samsung, thanks to the incredibly successful launch of the iPhone 4S in October 2011, which helped Apple to reach its record-breaking figure of 37 million iPhones sold in the December quarter. Its still very close though between Apple and Samsung, with only 1% in it: IDCs Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker found that Apple grew its share of the market by 128.4% year-over-year, to give it a 23.5% market share, and Samsung grew 275%, with a 22.8% market share. The number of actual phones sold by the two rival companies in the December quarter was also very close, with Samsung shifting 36 million units compared to Apples 37 million. In general, AppleInsider says that IDCs figures show that the worldwide smartphone market grew 54.7% from the year ago period, with a total of 157.8 million units shipped, up from 102 million in the same period in 2010.
