Mashable reports on a story in the Wall Street Journal today that AT&T will be cutting the price of the iPhone 3GS to just $49, with the price cut kicking in this Friday. The 8 GB iPhone 3GS currently retails at $99, but thats all going to change on Friday, when youll be able to pick one up for $49. Youll also need to get a two-year AT&T service contract and data plan, of course. As Mashable points out, this is a very smart move from AT&T to shift its stock of iPhone 3GSs and make as much money as it possibly can, and more importantly sign up as many new customers to two-year contracts as it possibly can, prior to losing its iPhone exclusivity, which is almost certain to happen in the very near future. Its so obvious from AT&Ts announcement yesterday at CES that it will be selling 20 new smartphones in 2011 that the company is getting ready for life without iPhone exclusivity. Its surely just a question of when now, not if.
