Politico reports today on another government agency in the US that has decided to replace departmental BlackBerrys with iPhones, following on from NOAA’s decision to do just that. This time it’s the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who have decided to abandon RIM’s handset.

“We’re going to delete the BlackBerry from the mix,” the ATF’s chief information officer Rick Holgate told Politico, adding that the move to replace approximately 3,800 BlackBerrys should take “probably no more than a year.”

According to Politico, 60% of the devices that the agency will be replacing the BlackBerrys with will be iPhones. The ATF will begin phasing out BlackBerrys as soon as this March, starting off with 2,400 BlackBerrys that are assigned to special agents in the field, with all of these phones being replaced by iPhones. Politico adds that some BlackBerrys will be replaced with iPads, following a pilot scheme involving 200 iPads.

Now we’re looking to move beyond that,” said Holgate. “Video streaming, GPS capability, capabilities, the camera… a variety of things. Yes, these things exist on BlackBerrys, but in terms of ease of use and adaptability of the devices, the iPhones are the more functional and compelling use case.”
