In a feature on British Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch, The New York Times reveals that the actor used his iPhone to help him get a role in J.J. Abrams forthcoming sequel to Star Trek. When Cumberbatch was on holiday in Gloucestershire, England, last year, Abrams called him and asked him to send in a videotaped audition for the part of the-not-so-good guy, as Cumberbatch refers to him, in the new Star Trek film. Just the sort of call that every actor wants to get, of course, but unfortunately Cumberbatch did not have anyone available to film the audition for him. This was because it was Christmas, and as anyone knows who lives here, at Christmas the whole country basically shuts up shop and goes on holiday for about two weeks! Highly stressed out at his predicament, the actor decided to film his audition piece on his iPhone in his friends kitchen. It turned out that Abrams was also on holiday, but once he managed to see the iPhone-filmed audition, he promptly hired Cumberbatch for the role, saying that it was one of the most compelling audition readings Id ever seen.
