MacStories reports today on a research note issued by Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi regarding his meeting with Apple COO Tim Cook, CFO Peter Oppenheimer and VP of Internet Services, Eddy Cue. Sacconaghi says that Tim Cook told him that despite the success of the iPhone, Apple knows it must still look beyond the current market, and that it plans on venturing into new markets, such as the lower-priced iPhone market, in order to expand Apple’s reach. Sacconaghi quotes Cook as saying that Apple does not want to make devices that are “just for the rich”, and that Apple is planning “clever things” for the prepaid market.

Sacconaghi also says that he gleaned from the meeting that Apple is determined to expand to other carriers, with the iPhone currently only with 175 carriers compared to RIM’s 550. So, although we don’t really know any specifics, it would certainly seem as though the basics of the recent rumours about cheaper iPhones on the way are along the right lines of what Apple is currently thinking about and working on.

Wonder how this is going to play out for apple. I can't imagine what clever things could be made for prepaid but I guess that's why it's clever....
