Checking serial no - !!

Hi

i got my new iphone 4 today the phone is still in original package sealed ....i wanted to check my serial number on apple support but it comes up as not valid .....

As i said the phone is still in package and unopened does the phone need to be registerd or active with a sim before i can check serial !!
