disabled iphone 3gs help !

hello all :newbie here i am in need of some help . i got my son a used 3gs from a guy 1 1/2 yrs ago worked just fine . well he lost it and when i cleaned his room i found it . i bought him another 1 so im goning to use it . he cant remember the pasword and now its disabled .i connected to itunes and its not found in devices but is in windows 8 hardware . can anyone please help me ? a step by step would be most helpfull as i am old ! LOL thank you in advance . DAWG
