I'm a senior with limited buying budget. Iphone 12 or 13 is my limit.
My current iphone no longer updates & I need the newer versions for certain apps.
Can you guys give me a guestimate about what year the iphones 12 & 13 will likely cease updating?

The iPhone 13 was released in 2021 and Apple typically updates iPhone software for five years.

Or even more. The iPhone XS, for example, came out in 2018, and still receives updates for iOS 18.

Apple also releases security updates for devices not compatible with the latest software, at irregular intervals. Phone 8 and later had an update to iOS 16.7.10 in August 2024.

Just out of curiosity, what is your budget? $200, or $300 USD? You may wait just a few weeks to see what the new iPhone SE 4 offers. I imagine it will be around $400. With a trade-in, you might be able to get it lower too. The new SE will last forever, and I can guarantee it will exceed the lifespan of the iPhone 11, 12, and 13. Possibly even the 14.

Yes, it's a problem. My XS is, I suspect, due to run out of updates this autumn. To keep up with security updates I shall have to replace it. My take on this is to do what I did last time, and buy this years model outright, from Apple (I don't want a middleman if there is a warrantable problem). Do your homework. There is a very considerable saving this way. Ignore the "Free credit"offers, they're not ! Also divide the total cost of a this years iPhone by 7 to see if getting an older phone is worth it. If the saving does not tally with the number of years old the phone is (and it won't be) then you may be better buying a used refurbished, bearing in mind that you may need a new battery!

Check out the new iPhone announced today by Apple. The price is supposed to be more reasonable and the software would be the latest and would have a better lifetime in front of it.
