Display models in store?

When does the Apple Store typically get display models in store? Do they wait until the preorder date, actual release date or sometime after the reveal? I would like to see the color options to decide on that before it comes time to preorder.

I can't remember seeing any of the newly announced iPhones on display at the Apple store before the actual release date.

I was in my local Apple premium reseller as the event was happening and nothing regarding the new iPhones was on display.
