do i have to download all my msgs when i add a new account?

Have just bought an iphone 4 today and am coming to grips with all the functions. When I added my gmail account it seemed to want to download all 15000 messages. Is there I way I can only download current daily messages & not all?

Go to
settings> mails, contacts, calendars: on that page, scroll down to mail, then tap on "SHOW" select the amount of emails you want to have all the time in your mail box. Close your email completely from the multitask bar or just refresh your mail box and there u go.

Thanks for that. I just did that and then deleted the 25 from the inbox but then 25 more older ones came up. Is there a way to stop that from happening and have an empty inbox with only new ones coming in as and when?

If your account is a gmail account, go to settings> mail, contacts, calendars> there you will see all your mail box accounts, tap on your gmail account and on the next page which comes up, off the "archive messages"
Refresh your mail box after that.
