Earlier this month, MDSec created a black box hardware brute force tool to break into passcode locked iPhones. The tool would essentially try every passcode imaginable, every 40 seconds, and take an estimated time of 110 hours.
Hacker and Jailbreak developer Majd Alfhaily got word of this brute force tool and decided to build a better mouse trap. Majd's tool is able to crack the passcode on an iPhone in about 14 hours. The only real problem with Majd's tool is that the device being brute forced needs to be Jailbroken, whereas MDsec's does not.
Majd's tool works in a way where the iPhone is not disabled after 10 bad attempts and only requires five seconds, instead of 40, between attempts. This might sound like scary stuff, although the person cracking a device would need physical access to it and quite a bit of time. We suggest that everyone have access to remote-wipe on their iPhone by the time they realize it's missing for so long.
