More bad news for RIM today with an exclusive story on AppleInsider saying that Halliburton, which is one of the world’s biggest energy service companies, is planning to replace thousands of the BlackBerrys that it provides for its employees with iOS devices, primarily the iPhone. The information was relayed by Halliburton to employees in an internal newsletter sent this month. According to AppleInsider, the switch was the result of “significant research” by Halliburton into iOS and Android, which led the firm to decide that iOS had “the best capabilities, controls and security for application development.” AppleInsider notes that Halliburton employ more than 70,000 members of staff in its oilfield operations across 70 countries, and requires the iOS devices so that many of these employees can have secure access to the company’s internal applications outside of the company’s proprietary network. According to AppleInsider’s sources within Halliburton, switching over to Apple’s iOS marks a major change in technology philosophy for Halliburton, as Apple Macs are currently “outlawed” at the company, with Windows ruling the roost as far as desktop PCs used by the company are concerned. Previous to this most recent turn of events, Windows Phones were the only alternative to the BlackBerry even considered by Halliburton.

A Halliburton spokeswoman confirmed the story with AppleInsider, saying that it would roll out iOS devices to replace the BlackBerrys of 4,500 of its employees in stages over the next two years.
