Help with jailbreaking/hactivating with straight talk

Hey guys, I just bought a used iPhone today, and have no sim card. I thought you didn't need a sim to hactivate? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose? And I jailbreaked the iPhone, but can't go into the phone, it still says insert a sim. Can someone help? My main purpose is to get the iPhone running with straight talk and be jailbroken. what iPhone is it? 3g 3gs, 4, 4s? what's your baseband is? what is the iOS version in your iPhone?

My iPhone is a 3g running 4.2.1 and I can't find baseband, because my iphone says please insert sim and connect to itunes. I jailbroke it with redsn0w. Isn't it supposed to activate for "ipod" use?
