I have a iPhone 3GS that I updated to 6.1.3 firmware yesterday. The home button does not work nor it passes the activation stage as I have updated my iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4S very recently whose SIM card I am pretty sure I cannot use due to different sizes. I am stuck on the activation stage and seeming my home button does not work, is preventing me from using the 112 dialing-on-the-keypad trick. iTunes says to contact with the provider for activation but I don't want to because I live very far (40 miles) from the nearest AT&T location; I know they will suggest me to go to their store. Can anyone help me?

This tutorial will guide you through the jailbreaking process. For the 3GS and 4, jailbreaking using RedSn0w will hacktivate the device, bypassing the activation screen. To keep the device from locking up again upon a respring or reboot, you'll need to install UltraSn0w. Note that you cannot unlock the iPhone 3GS on iOS 6.1.2 or 6.1.3 with UltraSn0w if you're looking to do so, it'll only allow you to keep your device open in an iPod state or if you put in a SIM.

I can do the steps until the DFU mode; my home button does not do its function. When I go under iTunes, it says "We're sorry, we are unable to continue with your activation at this time." I tried to enter the mode with TinyUmbrella and iPhone explorer, but these programs fail to work as well.

Awaiting reply.

Download the iOS 6.1.3 IPSW for your device, and create a DFU IPSW to use with iTunes when RedSn0w asks for your device in DFU mode.

Go to RedSn0w > Extras > Even More > DFU IPSW, and point it to the 6.1.3 IPSW. It must be the 6.1.3 IPSW because iTunes has to get Apple's signature. So before you follow the guide, do the following:
  1. Plug your device into your PC
  2. Create the DFU IPSW, making sure it's the 6.1.3 IPSW
  3. Open up iTunes, shift/command + click restore, and point it to the iOS 6.1.3 DFU IPSW that you just created and let it "restore". It's not a restore, it goes through the process, but loops back to DFU mode. At the end of the process, iTunes will show a message saying your device is in recovery mode and it needs to be restored, and your device's screen should be black (DFU mode)
  4. Now follow the guide.
When it asks for DFU mode after selecting the 6.0 IPSW in the beginning, ignore it since your device is already in DFU mode. At the end of the jailbreak, it'll ask you to boot tethered, which requires DFU mode. Again, open up iTunes, shift/command click the DFU IPSW, let it get into DFU mode again, and proceed to boot tethered.

Hey willerz22, what I did was enter recovery mode using limerain that allowed me to enter itunes and do the steps that you have instructed. I am now on the Downloading Jailbreak Data screen on iPhone and it has been stable until now. May I ask what is the normal duration for this page to linger? It has been ten minutes already and I have a fast connection.

It takes a while. The speed isn't really the issue, it's the unpackaging and the reading of the package that takes the longest. It on average takes me about 10-15 minutes for the restore process to go through and up end in DFU.

I am doing the restore now again because the iPhone keeps getting stuck on blank screen when I tried to use 'just boot' the phone on redsnow. I kicked it out of recovery using tinyumbrella. Right now, I am restoring to 6.1.3 again to start the overall process; DFU ipsw file and such.
